Question
Answer
How do you determine tire capacity ratings?
Carrier should list the tire rating for how the tire(s) are configured. If a carrier is going to list the tires on Axle #1 (steer axle) they would use the SINGLE rating in lbs for each tire on the steer axle. Example: SINGLE rating 11,400lbs x2= 22,800lbs max tire load limit on Axle #1. If a carrier is going to account for load limit on a DUAL tire configuration on any given axle, list the individual DUAL rating for each tire located on each axle. Example: Axle #2 (drive axle) Four tires, each with a DUAL tire rating of 6610 lbs x4= 26, 440lbs max tire load limit on that axle
How is a permit default route generated?
NHDOT Permits has been configured to establish default routes based on the roads that meet the need for safe and timely transportation on roads and bridges in the state that are best suited for oversize and overweight loads. All roads in the state are assigned impedance values based on a hierarchy of roadway classifications. For example, interstate and divided highways are assigned a lower impedance value that a privately owned road. Therefore, NHDOT Permits will develop a route including interstates and divided highways prior to utilizing roads with high impedance values. Live load analysis is performed for all bridges in the state for any overweight permit application during routing analysis. NHDOT Permits routing engine considers load and hauling equipment height, width, and length for oversize permit applications. In addition, total weight, axle weights, and axle spacings of the load and hauling equipment are also considered for all oversize/overweight and overweight permit applications. The permitting system routing engine includes consideration of current conditions of roads and bridges including but not limited to: local deliveries only, truck routes, detours, construction, road paving, bridge and highway maintenance activities, and other active or proposed restrictions.
How to determine registered weight for permits?
The registered weight for permits should be the New Hampshire registered weight as shown on a State of New Hampshire registration, registered weight as shown on state registration form, or the weight for New Hampshire as shown on the IRP Apportioned Registration Cab Card.
What happens when a non-default route is selected or requested?
All permits that include a non-default route are submitted for State review. When a permit applicant selects an alternate route, or a different route based on via points, the permit applicant must provide a compelling reason for the request. A compelling reason is defined as a strong and convincing argument for not taking the default route. Reasons such as best route, best route for the driver, shorter route by distance or time are not satisfactory. Turning radius of a vehicle will not allow a specific turn at an intersection(s) is considered a compelling reason. Applicants requesting a route other than the default route should understand that review of a non-default route will only occur during normal business hours and reviews are performed in the order submitted. This will result in delay of permit processing and bypass the auto-issue capability of NHDOT Permits.
What is a default route?
A default route is the route automatically generated by the routing engine in the permitting system and is based on the origin and destination provided by the applicant on the “Enter a Trip” page of the application process.
What is DBEA?

What is the difference between GVWR, GCWR and GVW?
GVWR - The maximum gross vehicle weight rating specified by the manufacturer for a single vehicle plus its load. GCWR - The maximum gross combination weight rating specified by the manufacturer(s) for a specific combination of vehicles plus its load. GVW- The total weight of a single vehicle plus its load.
